Outsourcing as an opportunity according to a MIT prof

In the magazine Tucson Citizen the MIT prof Amar Gupta sees outsourcing as an opportunity rather than a threat; a way to preserve jobs here and open markets for American products overseas.

“You can work here for eight hours, transfer the work to China for eight hours, then to Romania for eight hours,” Gupta said. “When you come back the next day, it feels like a fairy was doing the work. You lose some jobs, but you get a broader market. We want to protect jobs but want to make sure products are still competitive around the world.”

Gupta and internationally known MIT economics professor Lester Thurow, earlier this year jointly taught a wildly popular MIT course about outsourcing.
